Keeping up with the constant releases of absolutely delicious new reads can be a challenge especially when you want to read them all. I by no means have caught up on reading all the new books that have come out recently but I have read a few that I've really enjoyed! Here are a few to put on your radar the next time you want to try a new book:
Sea of Tranquility - Emily St John Mandel
Pub Date April 5th, 2022
Mandel is an incredible author who is known for weaving together storylines that don't seem like they should fit until suddenly they do. Sea of Tranquility is a short novel that brings together sci-fi, time travel, speculative fiction, and literary mystery into one amazing work of literary art. I absolutely loved it.
Bluebird - Geneveive Graham
Pub Date April 5th, 2022
When it comes to Canadian historical fiction, Geneveive Graham is the queen. Her newest fiction focuses on a couple who survive World War I and come home to find each other again with the backdrop of Rum Running and Bootleggers in southern Ontario. It has a great balance of action and romance and includes a ton of learning about the era of the 1920s during prohibition. Graham's novels are like a warm blanket, complete comfort reads for me.
When We Were Birds - Ayanna Lloyd Banwo
Pub Date March 15th
If you're a fan of magical realism and cultural myths, When We Were Birds is the perfect new 2022 read. Set in Trinidad & Tobago, it gives us two characters trying to find their own way, one who leaves home to work in a cemetery (even though its against is religion to be in the presence of the dead) and another who is the next in line of her family to help the dead navigate their new place.
Such Big Dreams - Reema Patel
Pub Date May 10, 2022
This one I am only half finished so far but am really really enjoying. Featuring a former street kid who has been given a "second chance" from a renown human rights lawyer and given a job at her law office. Rakhi is making her own way even though she is constantly reminded that she doesn't belong. I am really looking forward to seeing how this story ends.
The Naidisbo - Megan Wood
This debut fantasy novel by Megan Wood is the first of a 2 part instalment set in the region of Torekan. Ruled by a theocracy that has eradicated Naidisbo (peoples with a magical connection to the human body) and is working to eradicate Naturalists (peoples who's magic is connected to the earth), Anika is sent on the run when it's discovered she is a Naidisbo in hiding, right under the theocracy's noses. She makes new alliances as they fight back after over a century of oppression.
When We Lost Our Heads - Heather O'Neill
Pub Date Feb 8, 2022
This was my first Heather O'Neill and honestly it floored me. It was about two girls, both oddities of their time in their own right, who become childhood friends before they are forced apart by their families after a shocking act. They grow up and come in and out of each others lives as the city of Montreal changes around them. From factories to brothels to the elite homes of the rich, When We Lost Our Heads has surprising twists and turns while making profound comments on women's work conditions, sexuality, interactions with each other and more. And if you like novels with incredible and profound quotes and themes that stay with you, wow this one has it.
